Who We Are
AALI is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization that focuses on leadership development. This service has been provided to adults and youth in greater metro Denver area since 1990. We have graduated 157 from the program and provided mentoring to over 9,000 boys and girls, grades 5-12. History
The African-American Leadership Institute started as a vision of Mr. Larry Borom who was the current president of the Urban League of Metropolitan and other concerned citizens in 1977. This vision continued to be shared with individuals from the greater community, and funding for the African-American Leadership Institute was undertaken. Both President, Dr. Tom Brewer and Provost, Dr. David Williams, agreed that this program would fit with the vision of Metropolitan State College. Individuals from the community joined in, Helen Perry, Bob Jackson, Dr. Percy Morehouse, Walter Jones, and others. The committee chose Dr. Ron Knights, from the School of Business at Metropolitan State College to be the Executive Director. Hence, a unique approach was utilized to address the special concerns of African Americans by encouraging the coordination, cooperation and efforts of selected organizations and persons to help increase the industrial, economic, social, educational and spiritual well-being of the African-American community. In the spring of 1990 the AALI recruited its first class adult leadership program, which graduated in 1991. Historically, class participants have been involved with AALI projects such as, Expanding The Visions (ETV) conference for African-American boys, Sistah Pride conference for girls, the Wonderful Outdoor World (WOW), the Junior Leadership and the Safe City Youth Diversion Leadership Program. The AALI Alumni consists of 186 graduates as of 2005. These individuals were sponsored by their employers in private business, government, nonprofit, law enforcement, the construction industry, media, colleges and universities, health care, education, state and local transportation, the arts, communication, aerospace and engineering, insurance, k-12 education, and entrepreneurs. The AALI is honored to partner with these organizations as we join together to exchange ideas for the purpose of networking for national, state and local community improvements. Mission Statement
